Message from the Chair

Picture of Department Chair, Dr. John SeedsWelcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. Whether you are a patient with health care needs searching for appropriate services or a medical student interested in Obstetrics and Gynecology specialty training, we have worked to design a website that will help you find what you seek.

As a clinical department within the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and at the same time an academic department within Virginia Commonwealth University, we are dedicated to the three-fold mission of education, patient care, and research. Teaching is for us a passion, and a vocation that differentiates us from our colleagues in private practice. It is in teaching medical students and resident physicians that we transmit the knowledge that will sustain the practice of medicine into the next generation. It is in teaching that we are constantly re-energized and re-motivated in our own professional endeavors. Research is an integral part of both teaching and patient care. We are always asking the questions that lead to the studies that answer the questions that improve the outcomes of our patients. You cannot effectively teach without excellence in patient care, and active research supports and strengthens both teaching and patient care. We, therefore, strive to accomplish all three with excellence while being sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of our patients, and to their inherent right to privacy and dignity.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology includes five distinct Sections including General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Urogynecology. Each of these Sections is comprised of highly specialized experts with national and international reputations for excellence. These faculty provide truly state of the art services in both obstetrics and gynecology in modern and well equipped facilities both in downtown Richmond and at Stony Point, our satellite ambulatory facility in the suburbs. Whether the topic is fetal diagnosis, infertility, incontinence, or cancer diagnosis and treatment, we provide highly regarded expert professional services and educational programs.

We are proud of our department and we are proud of our medical students and residents. They are fine physicians as well as nice people. We enjoy what we do and we strive to do it well. This website is designed to allow you to explore the people and the places that constitute the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Virginia Commonwealth University. We hope it affords you the opportunity to get to know us and to discover either services that can benefit you or an educational opportunity you want to be part of. Whether we do ultimately become the source of either a clinical service or an educational experience for you, we wish you well and hope this site is helpful.
