Catherine A. Matthews, MD

Matthews“I like working at MCV because of the excellent quality of care, rigorous academic standards, and the potential to do research that might further our general medical knowledge and understanding. It is wonderful to provide care to women in this stimulating environment.”

Dr. Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and moved to Virginia in 1986. She attended the University of Virginia both as an undergraduate student, where she received a BA in History, and as a Medical Student. Dr. Matthews graduated as the Valedictorian of her medical school class and served as president of the medical honor society, AOA.  She completed her residency at MCV and joined the faculty in 2001 as a member of the Urogynecology division.

Dr. Matthews decided to pursue a career in OB/GYN because she is committed to improving healthcare for women.  Professional areas of interest include incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse with a special interest in anal incontinence and the injury that is sustained to the pelvic organs at the time of vaginal childbirth. She is actively involved in research regarding incontinence and prolapse and is the Director of Clinical Services for the VCU Institute of Women's Health.
